I am kicking off a 30 Day SUGAR BUSTER CHALLENGE on Tuesday, April 1st! I’m going to tell you here everything you need to know to do this one all by yourself, AND give you an option if you’d like to do the Challenge with me!

STEP ONE: WHY?

First, you may be asking yourself- “WHY should I cut sugar out? I know it’s ‘bad’ for me, but that doesn’t tell me much. Plus, it’s everywhere, and this sounds like it’ll be too hard to do. Not to mention the fact that I like it”.

Let me answer by saying that, if you’re reading this, then you have a desire to try this out. Here’s the first article in a series that I have found to give you the basic knowledge that you need. I highly recommend that you take a few minutes to read this simple article now, so you can make a strong decision as to whether you’re ready to take this on.

Extra note: we are talking about added sugar for this challenge. It will not affect your fruit intake.

 

STEP TWO: WHAT?

Second, I want to give you the intention behind my creating this challenge. It is basically a lesson in self awareness. I am not suggesting that you completely cut sugar out of your life ‘cold turkey’. As mentioned, it is everywhere in our culture. However, I want to give you tools so that you have the knowledge of the damage it is causing you and your children, as well as an awareness of exactly how much you are consuming. This way you can make more conscious and knowledgable decisions about your and your families health.

Also, by building the awareness, you will automatically start to want to cut back on your sugar intake. Taking this challenge on is a powerful step towards a healthier lifestyle without the pressure!

 

STEP THREE: HOW?

Third, How will I guide you to build your awareness of your sugar intake? With the following tools:

1- A bag of sugar

2- An empty container with a lid

3- A food journal

4- A teaspoon

AND here’s what you’re going to do with these tools:

1- Starting on Tuesday, April 1st, you will write down everything you eat and the added sugar that goes along with what you ate. Make sure to note the serving sizes. imagesFor instance- if a granola bar is 2 servings, and you eat the whole bar, multiply the sugar listed on the ingredients label by 2.

Keep track of anything with added sugar: salad dressings can be sneaky, any ‘healthy’ snacks, yogurt, juices, basically anything without one ingredient (stay simple with an avocado, carrot, apple, etc). Food companies put sugar in almost everything these days- not because your pasta sauce, or whatever, needs the sugar, BUT because the manufacturers know that sugar is addictive and you will come back looking for more. You are best off keeping your food simple. One ingredient is best.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Substituting sugar with an artificial sweetener is NOT AN OPTION. Artificial Sweeteners are actually worse for your system than sugar. If you need a sweet, stick with the sugar. We’ll save the info on artificial sweeteners for another day…

2- At the end of the day (or whenever works for you), you are going to count up your grams of sugar and get a teaspoon. For every 4 grams of sugar that you consumed, you will put one teaspoon of sugar into your empty container. So if you consume 50 grams of sugar in a day, that’s 12 and a half teaspoons of sugar in your container.

If you do this on a daily basis, it’s not going to be a big chunk of time or a huge deal and you will build your awareness of what you are putting into your body, and be able to make stronger and more conscious decisions about your health.

STEP FOUR: HOW WILL YOU FOLLOW THROUGH?

How are you going to make sure you follow through with this?

You are more likely to be successful if you do a challenge like this with a group. You can create your own support team, or you can join a group that already exists.

This is also the only way you will be able to work with me on this Challenge. I will be guiding the group all along the journey. I want to see you succeed, and I know if you put your money where your mouth is (even if it’s just 50 cents a day) that you are serious about following through.

 

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve given you EVERYTHING here so that you can do this on your own. I’ve held nothing back. But please know that you are MUCH more likely to succeed if you are part of a support team. It makes sense if you think about it. So one way or another, create or join a support team and take on this Sugar Buster Challenge like you MEAN IT! Let’s kick some SUGAR BUTT!
