In my 9 Steps to Overall Health, the 3rd step is to reduce Sugar and Processed Foods intake. Let’s look at some of the reasons to reduce Sugar intake…
Some of the Health consequences of consuming simple sugar (classes of simple sugars include sucrose, fructose, honey, and malts) are:
1-By raising insulin levels you promote storage of fat and thus experience rapid weight gain
2-Ingesting sugar creates inflammation which in turn creates and aggravates all sorts of issues:
c-more susceptible to common colds
e-breaks down collagen in skin leading to sagging and wrinkling
3-worsens mood disorders and mental illness
4-negatively affects nervous disorders
7-contributes to and creates arthritis
8-deteriorates the endocrine system, as it has no nutritional value
9- And glucose is cancer’s preferred fuel!!
So- you can pretty much harm yourself in all sorts of ways by consuming sugar. And, one of the worst qualities of sugar is- the more you eat it, the more you CRAVE it! It’s just a downward cycle, folks.
One study shows that if you can keep your sugar intake under 15% of your complex carbohydrates intake, that you will lessen the harmful effects. The advice is to consume complex carbohydrates (veggies, beans, legumes, whole grains) and keep the odds in your favor.
The articles I have read often discount each other, but these are the basics. My simple advice is to limit any extra use of sugars, check the ingredients in your condiments, and if you MUST eat sweets, limit it to once per week.
