My Sammy just took his first steps! He is such a little trooper. You should see him go. Here’s the scene:
He smiles as he plots his next move. He knows what he is about to attempt and he is excited at the uncertainty of it. He lifts his arms up, rises up on the balls of his feet, and then falls flat on his ass.
It looks like it hurts, but he laughs hysterically and then repeats the process. He’s been doing that for a while now. And nothing stops him. He just loves it and keeps testing his limits. And then laughs like a maniac.
And today it changed. Today he did the lifting his arms up rise on the balls of his feet thing, but instead of falling- he angled himself towards our cushy ottoman so he wouldn’t fall down. Then he angled himself towards me and made eye contact.
Without thinking, just responding to his eye contact, I put my arms out and he walked to me! A whole entire 2 steps! He kind of leaned into it and used some momentum to get himself to me but he did it. And he’s just unlocked a key to life. Doors are opening for this guy, let me tell you!
So let me ask you a question. When you read that, was it just words in your head? Or were you picturing my baby smiling and laughing and falling and banging out his 2 big boy steps?
You had the image in your mind, didn’t you. So hold that picture and let’s do a little experiment. Let’s put YOU in that same position. After all, at one point you did have to learn to walk. And you probably did it much the same way. Having fun, learning from your results and tweaking so that you could get your desired outcome. And you did it!
The main difference between you now and you back then is that when you were a baby you didn’t have an ego and you weren’t set up with all of these ‘what if’s’ and expectations and all the crap that seems to come along with growing up.
Now for the next question: When is the last time you tried something new? When is the last time you followed through on a dream? It doesn’t even have to be a BIG dream. It could be something like “I want to try a dance class”. Or it could be making an effort to take care of your health and get in shape. It could be anything!
Ask yourself what is holding you back? The usual suspects are “It’ll take too long” and “I won’t be able to do it anyway.” Do either of those resonate for you?
Now go back to Sammy. In a baby’s perspective, learning to walk takes a LONG time! The process is a few months, and when you’re only a year old, that is a BIG percentage of your entire life. But Sammy isn’t worried about the time it’ll take. He seems to enjoy the journey and isn’t even really worried about when the ‘results’ will show up. He just keeps plugging away on a daily basis.
He isn’t even worried about what we call ‘failure’ (failure is simply results that you didn’t want. If you don’t like your results, change your thoughts and behaviors). He seems to enjoy them actually. He falls on his butt, HARD, and he cracks up! When’s the last time you fell on your butt and laughed it off?
So where do you go from here? How can you apply this info?
I’ll break it down.
1- Think of something you want to do but you’ve been holding back because either you don’t think you can do it, or you think it’ll take too long.
2- Then picture yourself as the baby that you once were. You learned how to walk and that took a LOT of your time and energy. You didn’t get your ego caught up in it. You just took action, and kept taking action, whether you fell on your ass or not. And you liked it.
3- See where you can apply the attitude that ‘baby’ you had when it came to learning to walk.
Remember- the time is going to pass anyway.
And yes you CAN do it, whatever your ‘thing’ is.
Still worried about failing? Let’s rephrase. Failure is simply results. We ALL fail. What differentiates us is what we do about it.
We all get results that we don’t want at some time or another and it helps us to focus in on what we really do want. We learn what doesn’t work and move on. We can even learn how to enjoy the journey and let go of the need to judge ourselves and put ourselves down.
